Supplementary information

INHBC also known as Inhibin Beta C is a protein known for its role in various cellular processes. It has a molecular mass of approximately 42 kDa. This protein expresses in a variety of tissues including liver testis and ovary. INHBC belongs to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily known for its involvement in cell growth and differentiation.
Biological function summary

INHBC functions as part of the Inhibin/Activin complex that regulates follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion. Activin which INHBC is a subunit of plays a role in reproductive processes and cellular differentiation. This protein actively participates in modulating processes related to gonadal functions and embryogenesis. Its activity impacts cell proliferation anti-inflammatory responses and wound healing.

Pathways

INHBC interplays within the TGF-beta signaling pathway an important pathway controlling cellular proliferation and differentiation. It relates closely to Inhibin Alpha and Activin A within these pathways. These interactions with related proteins allow it to influence reproductive and cellular growth processes and maintain regulatory balances in physiology.

INHBC correlates with conditions such as reproductive system disorders and certain cancers. Its overexpression or dysregulation can link to ovarian cancer through its association with Activin A. Research suggests that alterations in INHBC levels may influence pathological conditions by disturbing normal growth factor signaling emphasizing its role in disease progression.

Target data

Inhibins and activins inhibit and activate, respectively, the secretion of follitropin by the pituitary gland. Inhibins/activins are involved in regulating a number of diverse functions such as hypothalamic and pituitary hormone secretion, gonadal hormone secretion, germ cell development and maturation, erythroid differentiation, insulin secretion, nerve cell survival, embryonic axial development or bone growth, depending on their subunit composition. Inhibins appear to oppose the functions of activins.
