Biological function summary
UNC5D functions in axon guidance and neuronal migration. It plays a central role in the regulation of cell survival and apoptosis being part of a receptor complex that includes netrin-1. In the presence of netrin-1 UNC5D helps to mediate cell adhesion and guidance. The absence of its ligand however initiates programmed cell death making its presence significant in maintaining cellular homeostasis. This mechanism has implications in how neural networks are formed and maintained in the body.
Pathways
UNC5D influences both the apoptosis and axon guidance pathways. As a dependence receptor it is deeply involved in controlling cell fate through signaling pathways that govern cell survival and death. The interaction of UNC5D with netrin-1 is key in guiding neural development while also connecting with apoptotic pathways involving proteins such as DCC (Deleted in Colorectal Carcinoma). This relationship signifies its role in linking guidance cue responses with survival signals necessary for proper neural development.
