Notes

This Mouse Hemoglobin A1c ELISA Kit (ab285317, EM0476) is a sandwich ELISA assay for the quantitative measurement of HbA1c in mouse red blood cell lysis and other biological fluids. The density of color is proportional to the amount of HbA1c captured from the samples.

Supplementary info

Biological function summary

Hemoglobin A1c is a marker for assessing long-term glycemic control. It does not operate as part of a larger complex but modifies the hemoglobin protein inside erythrocytes. The level of HbA1c reflects the average blood glucose concentration over the previous two to three months. Its presence and levels offer insight into the overall metabolic state providing important information for clinicians while managing conditions like diabetes. HbA1c is important since it allows monitoring without the need for daily blood sugar measurements.

Activity summary

Hemoglobin A1c also known as HbA1c or glycohemoglobin is a form of hemoglobin that is chemically linked to a glucose molecule. It has a molecular weight of approximately 64 kDa. This protein is primarily found in red blood cells where it carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Hemoglobin A1c is produced when glucose in the blood binds irreversibly to hemoglobin a process known as glycation. Researchers measure Hemoglobin A1c levels to manage blood sugar control particularly in diabetic patients.

Pathways

HbA1c integrates into the glucose metabolism pathway and is linked to protein glycation pathways. Within the glucose metabolism pathway glycated hemoglobin serves as a longitudinal biomarker. It does not directly interact with other proteins like insulin but insulin levels can indirectly influence the HbA1c levels by regulating blood glucose levels. The accurate measurement of HbA1c by HbA1c assay or HbA1c ELISA provides insights into the efficacy of diabetes management strategies.

Associated diseases and disorders

Hemoglobin A1c plays a significant role in diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. High levels of HbA1c indicate poor glycemic control which is associated with complications of diabetes such as retinopathy. In cardiovascular disease elevated HbA1c levels act as a risk factor for adverse outcomes. The relationship between HbA1c and these diseases also highlights connections with other proteins such as insulin which regulates glucose and subsequently HbA1c levels. Utilizing HA1c test kits and HbA1c kits healthcare providers can monitor potential long-term complications in patients with elevated HbA1c levels.
