Product details
Hepcidin is a liver-produced hormone that constitutes the main circulating regulator of iron absorption and distribution across tissues. Acts by promoting endocytosis and degradation of ferroportin, leading to the retention of iron in iron-exporting cells and decreased flow of iron into plasma. Controls the major flows of iron into plasma: absorption of dietary iron in the intestine, recycling of iron by macrophages, which phagocytose old erythrocytes and other cells, and mobilization of stored iron from hepatocytes.
Rat Hepcidin ELISA Kit (ab285233, E4694) is a sandwich ELISA assay for the quantitative measurement of Hepcidin in rat serum, plasma and cell culture supernatants. The density of color is proportional to the amount of Hepcidin captured from the samples.
This product is manufactured by BioVision, an Abcam company and was previously called E4694 Hepcidin (Rat) ELISA Kit. E4694-100 is the same size as the 96 test size of ab285233.

Biological function summary
This hormone plays a critical role in maintaining iron balance within the body by regulating both the absorption of dietary iron in the intestine and the release of stored iron from macrophages and hepatocytes. Hepcidin operates independently and is not part of any larger complex. Its levels fluctuate in response to various stimuli including iron levels inflammation and erythropoietic demand impacting iron transport and storage.
Pathways
Hepcidin is integral to the iron metabolism pathway. It interacts intricately with proteins such as transferrin and ferritin which are involved in iron transport and storage. Hepcidin's function is modulated by the BMP/SMAD signaling pathway as well where its expression is promoted by these signaling proteins. This regulation ensures that iron levels are properly maintained for critical processes such as hemoglobin synthesis and cellular respiration.
