Biological function summary
4E-T regulates mRNA metabolism and translation serving as a modulator within the cell. It forms a complex with eIF4E and other translation repressors such as DEAD-box helicase DDX6 and Pat1 protein which then associates with mRNA to influence its translational state. This interaction enables 4E-T to impact gene expression by selectively binding and sequestering capped mRNAs therefore blocking their translation initiation at ribosomes.
Pathways
4E-T is involved in the mTOR signaling pathway which is essential for cell growth and metabolism. It also plays a role in the stress response pathway known as the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay pathway. In these pathways 4E-T interacts with proteins like LSm1 and UPF1 coordinating the cellular response to nutrient availability and stress and contributing to the degradation of faulty mRNA.
