4% formaldehyde-fixed SK-N-BE cells labeling ABCC9 using ab174629 at 1/100 dilution in ICC/IF. Cells were fixed for 15 minutes at room temperature and incubated with primary antibody for 1 hour at room temperature. Secondary antibody was a goat anti-mouse ATTO 488 (green) at 1/100 dilution incubated for 1 hour at room temperature. Counter stained with Phalloidin Texas Red F-actin stain. Nuclei were stained with DAPI (blue).

ABCC9 also known as SUR2 (sulfonylurea receptor 2) is a protein part of the ATP-binding cassette transporter superfamily. It weighs approximately 174 kDa. The protein functions as a regulatory subunit of the KATP potassium channel controlling ion flow through cell membranes. ABCC9 is present in various tissues with significant expression in cardiac and skeletal muscles and in pancreatic cells.
Biological function summary

ABCC9 plays an important role in the response to metabolic changes by linking cellular excitability to metabolism. As a component of the KATP channel complex it regulates the channel's open and closing states in response to intracellular ATP levels. This regulation impacts muscle contraction and insulin release significant processes in energy maintenance and homeostasis.
