ADAT1 also known as ADAT one or Adenosine Deaminase Acting on tRNA 1 is an enzyme that catalyzes the deamination of adenosine to inosine in transfer RNAs. This enzyme is critical for the proper modification of tRNA ensuring accurate protein synthesis. ADAT1 is composed of approximately 55 kDa polypeptides and is expressed in various tissues with notably higher levels in the testes and brain. It modifies tRNA anticodons which are necessary for precise translation of the genetic code.
The function of tRNA modification by ADAT1 impacts protein translation accuracy and efficiency. It is a part of a larger complex involving other tRNA-modifying enzymes. Proper functioning of ADAT1 is necessary to maintain the integrity of protein synthesis as it impacts the decoding of genetic information during translation by tRNA. This process helps cells to correctly read the mRNA sequences and modify the protein expression accordingly.
TRNA modification by ADAT1 plays an important role in the protein synthesis pathway. This modification enhances the fidelity and efficiency of translating genetic information from mRNA into functional proteins. The enzyme works closely with other tRNA modification enzymes such as ADAT2 and ADAT3 which are involved in post-transcriptional modification of tRNA. These interactions ensure that tRNAs have the correct structure and function to support normal cell physiology.
Malfunction of ADAT1 is associated with neurological disorders and some types of cancer. This is due to the enzyme's role in maintaining protein synthesis fidelity which can affect cellular health. Abnormal activity or expression of ADAT1 could disrupt protein balance in cells linking it to disorders like intellectual disability and certain cancers. The reduced function of ADAT1 affects its interaction with other proteins like ADAR which are involved in RNA editing and are important for normal cellular processes.
