Supplementary information

This supplementary information is collated from multiple sources and compiled automatically.

Adenovirus also known by alternate names such as Adenoviren and Ad51 represents a group of medium-sized non-enveloped viruses with a double-stranded DNA genome. The adenovirus is approximately 90-100 nm in size and is notable for its icosahedral capsid structure. It primarily infects epithelial cells in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts but it can also affect other tissues. Its presence is recorded in diverse environments often acting as pathogens in humans and other animals.
Biological function summary

Adenoviruses function by hijacking the host cell's machinery to replicate their DNA and produce viral proteins. They do not form part of a larger complex; instead they independently orchestrate the synthesis of viral particles. Their proteins manipulate host cellular processes leading to cell lysis and viral release. Adenoviral proteins such as E1A and E1B play critical roles in their replication cycles and pathogenicity.

Pathways

Adenoviruses interact closely with pathways involved in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis. These viruses exploit cell cycle-associated proteins like p53 and Rb to immortalize host cells and evade apoptosis respectively. By bypassing normal regulatory checkpoints adenoviruses can ensure continuous replication and survival within the host.

Adenoviruses are commonly associated with conditions like acute respiratory diseases and gastroenteritis. They have a significant connection to the immune responses triggered in infected patients often involving proteins such as cytokines and chemokines. In some cases adenovirus-related infections can lead to severe outcomes in individuals with compromised immune systems demonstrating their impact on human health.
