It functions by anchoring protein kinase A (PKA) to specific sites within the cell enabling targeted phosphorylation of substrates. AKAP2 is widely expressed in multiple tissues notably in the brain heart and muscle. This widespread expression highlights its role in diverse cellular processes across various cell types.
