Aldosterone 3 known also as CYP11B2 is an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of aldosterone. It belongs to the cytochrome P450 family and exhibits a mass of approximately 58 kDa. The enzyme is highly expressed in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex where it facilitates the conversion of corticosterone to aldosterone by catalytic hydroxylation processes. The key role of Aldosterone 3 in this conversion highlights its important enzymatic function in steroid hormone production.
The process of converting corticosterone into aldosterone by CYP11B2 contributes significantly to the regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance. This enzyme operates within a complex of electron transfer proteins ensuring the supply of electrons for effective catalysis. It partners with adrenodoxin and adrenodoxin reductase to perform its functions. This cooperation allows for the precise control of aldosterone release into the bloodstream affecting the balance of sodium and potassium.
Aldosterone 3 plays an important role in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) which is central to cardiovascular regulation and fluid homeostasis. Within this pathway CYP11B2 activity links closely with angiotensin II a peptide that stimulates its expression and action. RAAS integrates the function of other proteins such as aldosterone synthase connecting several feedback mechanisms that control blood pressure.
