Biological function summary
MHC class I molecules including HLA A and HLA B are integral to immune response regulation. They are components of a larger complex that involves interaction with β2-microglobulin. This interaction stabilizes the MHC class I molecules on the cell surface aiding in the antigen presentation process. By presenting internal peptides these molecules help the immune system monitor cellular health and respond to infections or cellular transformations.
Pathways
MHC class I molecules play an essential role in the antigen processing and presentation pathway which is central to adaptive immunity. This pathway involves the processing of intracellular proteins by the proteasome and their transport into the endoplasmic reticulum by transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) proteins. Related proteins in this pathway include tapasin and calreticulin which assist in loading peptides onto MHC class I molecules. The presented peptides are then recognized by CD8+ T cells key players in the immune response.
