Apolipoprotein CIV (ApoC-IV) is a member of the apolipoprotein family. Structurally it weighs approximately 11 kDa and is expressed mainly in the liver. In terms of function it participates in lipid transport and metabolism acting as a component of lipoprotein particles. ApoC-IV modifies the activity of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism impacting lipid levels in the bloodstream.
ApoC-IV plays a significant role in the regulation of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. It is not part of a larger protein complex but interacts with various components within the lipoprotein transportation system. Its activity affects the breakdown and utilization of lipids influencing lipid homeostasis in the body. Studies suggest that ApoC-IV might have an impact on the efficiency of lipoprotein lipase which is essential for lipid metabolism.
ApoC-IV functions in lipid metabolic processes notably within the triglyceride-rich lipoprotein metabolism pathway. It interacts with other apolipoproteins such as Apolipoprotein CIII (ApoC-III) and Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) which also contribute to lipid regulation in this pathway. These interactions help maintain balance in lipid levels and ensure proper lipid distribution through tissues.
ApoC-IV links to cardiovascular disease and hyperlipidemia. It can influence plasma lipid levels and contribute to lipid imbalances associated with these conditions. ApoC-IV functions alongside proteins like ApoE and ApoB in these diseases where abnormal lipid transport and metabolism can exacerbate disease progression. Understanding its role offers insights into potential therapeutic targets for lipid-related disorders.
