Aspergillus refers to a genus of fungi with over 200 species. It is important in both medical and agricultural contexts. Aspergillus species such as A. fumigatus and A. niger have mechanical roles in decomposition recycling carbon and nutrients. This fungus expresses its components widely in the environment particularly in soil and organic materials. The mass of Aspergillus spores can vary but they are generally lightweight to facilitate airborne distribution. Researchers often study Aspergillus to understand its mechanical role in organic matter breakdown.
Biological function summary

The fungi serve critical roles in ecosystems by breaking down complex organic polymers. Aspergillus can grow and thrive in a variety of conditions and environments including air and soil. It also forms part of microbial communities where it interacts with bacteria and other fungi. Aspergillus works in synergy with various microbial species to degrade plant biomass producing enzymes that further facilitate decomposition processes. Despite its beneficial roles some Aspergillus species like A. flavus produce aflatoxins which are harmful to both humans and animals.

Pathways

With regard to pathways in which the Aspergillus plays a role it is heavily involved in the decomposition pathway for breaking down lignocellulosic biomass. This process involves enzymes that decompose cellulose and hemicellulose into simpler molecules digestible by other organisms. Within these pathways Aspergillus enzymes like cellulases and xylanases collaborate with proteins involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Some species also participate in biosynthetic pathways for secondary metabolites which may contribute to their survival or competition in the environment.

Aspergillus is notably related to aspergillosis which affects individuals with compromised immune systems. Aspergillus fumigatus is the primary culprit in invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. This infection can become serious and sometimes fatal if not promptly treated. Additionally Aspergillus can contribute to allergic reactions as seen in conditions such as asthma and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). During these disorders the specter of a dysfunctional immune response can exacerbate the effects of these pathological states.
