Astrotactin 1 (ASTN1) is a protein that plays a mechanical role in cell adhesion and migration. This protein with an approximate mass of 160 kDa facilitates interactions between neuronal cells. Researchers have commonly referred to ASTN1 in alternative names including "Astrotactin." It is expressed in the central nervous system with significant expression in developing neurons.
ASTN1 supports the movement and proper positioning of neurons particularly during the developmental stages of the brain. As part of a protein complex ASTN1 functions in neuronal migration processes essential for the formation of organized brain structures. It contributes to the cellular interactions with various extracellular matrix components aiding in the precise layering of neurons.
Several neurological pathways involve ASTN1's activity in guiding neurons to their final destinations. It plays a role in the Reelin signaling pathway where it interacts with proteins like Dab1 and Reelin to orchestrate neuronal positioning. Additionally the protein contributes to regulating cellular interactions that are critical for synaptic differentiation and organization.
ASTN1 has associations with neurological conditions such as lissencephaly and autism spectrum disorder. Lissencephaly a condition linked to improper neuronal migration highlights the vital function of ASTN1 in brain development. Researchers have also found connections between ASTN1 and the Reelin protein both implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders suggesting potential pathways for therapeutic intervention.
