ATP13A5 also known as P5B-ATPase is a member of the P-type ATPase superfamily. This protein functions as a cation transporter across cellular membranes. ATP13A5 has a molecular mass of approximately 150 kDa. Expression of ATP13A5 occurs mainly in neurons within the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Detailed analyses show that ATP13A5 activity influences ion homeostasis and transport demonstrating its importance in cellular health and signaling.
Biological function summary

ATP13A5 plays an essential role in maintaining cellular ion balance. It functions as part of a transport complex involved in regulating manganese homeostasis. Proper manganese levels are critical for neuronal cell function and survival making ATP13A5 indispensable for brain health. The protein's activity helps neurons to manage oxidative stress an important factor in preventing cell damage.

Pathways

ATP13A5 participates in manganese metabolism and ion transport pathways. It partners with proteins like ATP13A2 which also influences ion homeostasis in neuronal cells. The two proteins display functional overlap acting synergistically to preserve neuronal health by controlling manganese levels.
