RELM alpha also known as Retnla is a small secreted protein with a molecular mass of approximately 10 kDa. It belongs to the resistin-like molecule family and is mainly expressed in adipose tissues and the lungs. However some expression also occurs in the gastrointestinal tract and immune cells. It plays a role as a signaling molecule and is secreted under various physiological and pathological conditions.
RELM alpha functions as a modulator of immune responses and inflammation. It has a part in the immune network and participates in the regulation of insulin sensitivity. While it does not form part of a specific complex it interacts with other cytokines and chemokines to modulate the activity of macrophages and other immune cells. This modulation impacts the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory signals in the body.
RELM alpha plays roles in the metabolic and immune pathways. It influences the toll-like receptor signaling pathway which involves key proteins like TLR4 which is essential for pathogen recognition and innate immunity. RELM alpha also appears in pathways related to glucose metabolism interacting with other metabolic regulators to affect energy homeostasis and insulin action.
RELM alpha has connections to conditions like obesity and asthma. In obesity levels of RELM alpha may correlate with inflammatory states and insulin resistance interacting with proteins like adiponectin and leptin. In asthma RELM alpha may contribute to airway inflammation working alongside proteins like IL-13 to drive inflammatory responses in the respiratory system. These associations make RELM alpha a significant target for therapeutic investigation in related disorders.
