C1orf163 also known as Chromosome 1 Open Reading Frame 163 is a protein with a molecular mass of around 34 kDa. It localizes mainly in the mitochondria. The expression of C1orf163 has been observed in various tissues suggesting its presence in multiple physiological systems. However it shows higher expression specifically in heart and skeletal muscle tissues which indicates a potential muscle-related function.
The protein C1orf163 seems to play a role in maintaining mitochondrial function. It is part of mitochondrial organization and possibly involved in energy metabolism due to its localization. Although not widely characterized C1orf163 is speculated to participate in the structural integrity of mitochondria. Researchers have identified it as a component of the mitochondrial complex suggesting its integration with other mitochondrial proteins that ensure mitochondrial health and function.
C1orf163 appears associated with the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC). The electron transport chain is important for ATP production. C1orf163 interacts with components within the ETC pathway maintaining energy production processes. Its connection with other mitochondrial proteins like NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Complex I) supports energy conversion within cells.
Abnormalities in C1orf163 function or expression have links to disorders related to mitochondrial dysfunction. One such disorder is mitochondrial myopathy which affects muscle function. C1orf163 may interact with proteins such as COX10 further implicating it in mitochondrial-related pathologies. Studies aim to accurately determine its role in these conditions which could potentially identify therapeutic targets for mitochondrial disorders.
