CACNB1 also known as CAB1 is a protein that forms a part of the voltage-dependent L-type calcium channel complex. It is one of the auxiliary beta subunits and plays an important role in regulating the activity of the channel by stabilizing the alpha 1 subunit's structure. CACNB1 has a molecular weight of approximately 65 kDa. Its expression takes place in various tissues including the heart skeletal muscle and brain which indicates its importance in excitable tissues.
Several processes depend on CACNB1's function. This protein contributes significantly to modulating calcium ion influx into cells a fundamental function for cellular activities such as muscle contraction neurotransmitter release and gene expression. CACNB1 exists as part of the calcium channel complex and interacts directly with the alpha 1 subunit which influences channel properties and cell surface expression.
CACNB1 is integral to the calcium signaling pathway and cardiac muscle contraction pathway. It directly interacts with the alpha 1 subunit of the L-type calcium channels facilitating calcium ion entry that is necessary for proper signal transduction. In these pathways other proteins such as CACNA1C also play a significant role by forming part of the channel complex that mediates these essential physiological effects.
CACNB1 expression relates to conditions like cardiac arrhythmia and skeletal muscle disorders. Changes in its expression or function can disrupt normal calcium ion balance and lead to these diseases. Interactions with proteins like CACNA1C which also plays a role in channel function are of particular interest as alterations in these proteins are often seen in these disorders.
