Supplementary information

This supplementary information is collated from multiple sources and compiled automatically.

CAMSAP1 also known as Calmodulin Regulated Spectrin Associated Protein 1 functions in the stabilization of non-centrosomal microtubules by binding to their minus ends. It has a molecular weight of approximately 170 kDa. Researchers have found its expression in various tissues with significant levels in the brain and epithelial cells. This protein plays an important role in maintaining cellular architecture by regulating the organization and stability of the microtubule network.
Biological function summary

By maintaining microtubule integrity CAMSAP1 supports processes like cell division intracellular transport and cellular polarity. It does not act alone but interacts as part of larger complexes that include other microtubule-associated proteins. These interactions allow it to influence centrosome-independent microtubule arrays and contribute to the anchoring of microtubule minus ends.

Pathways

CAMSAP1 integrates into the cytoskeleton organization and cell division pathways. In these pathways it collaborates with key proteins like microtubule-associated proteins MAP7 and CLASP1 aiding the proper segregation of chromosomes during mitosis. The regulation of microtubules by CAMSAP1 and its associations with related proteins effectuates these critical cellular processes.

CAMSAP1 has links to neurodevelopmental disorders and cancer. Dysfunction in its activity can lead to improper neuronal positioning contributing to developmental brain disorders. In cancer alterations in CAMSAP1 expression impact cell migration and tumor growth. It functions alongside proteins like MAP7 and spectrin which also participate in these disease processes highlighting its influence in pathological states affecting both neuronal and cancer cell proliferation.

Target data

Key microtubule-organizing protein that specifically binds the minus-end of non-centrosomal microtubules and regulates their dynamics and organization (PubMed : 19508979, PubMed : 21834987, PubMed : 24117850, PubMed : 24486153, PubMed : 24706919). Specifically recognizes growing microtubule minus-ends and stabilizes microtubules (PubMed : 24486153, PubMed : 24706919). Acts on free microtubule minus-ends that are not capped by microtubule-nucleating proteins or other factors and protects microtubule minus-ends from depolymerization (PubMed : 24486153, PubMed : 24706919). In contrast to CAMSAP2 and CAMSAP3, tracks along the growing tips of minus-end microtubules without significantly affecting the polymerization rate : binds at the very tip of the microtubules minus-end and acts as a minus-end tracking protein (-TIP) that dissociates from microtubules after allowing tubulin incorporation (PubMed : 24486153, PubMed : 24706919). Through interaction with spectrin may regulate neurite outgrowth (PubMed : 24117850).
