Cathepsin O is a lysosomal cysteine protease from the cathepsin family also known as CTSO. This enzyme has a molecular mass of approximately 36 kDa and plays a role in protein catabolism. It expresses strongly in tissues such as the placenta and thymus. Unlike some other cathepsins Cathepsin O expression is not limited to the lysosomal compartments. It can localize to the cytoplasm under certain conditions which might influence its activity range in breaking down substrates.
Biological function summary

Cathepsin O participates in protein degradation and turnover processes. It function as a protease that breaks peptide bonds aiding in the recycling of cellular components. Though not part of a well-defined complex it cooperates with other proteases to maintain the balance of intracellular proteins.
