Cdx4 also known as Caudal type homeobox transcription factor 4 plays an important role in embryonic development and cell differentiation. This protein with an estimated mass of approximately 31 kDa acts as a transcription factor that bind DNA at specific sites regulating gene expression. Cdx4 is mostly expressed in tissues such as the developing testes and parts of the nervous system. The expression pattern hints at its importance during specific stages of early development.
Biological function summary

Cdx4 influences the regulation of genes involved in the posterior body patterning. This transcription factor does not work alone; it participates in complexes with other homeobox proteins to modulate target genes. During early development Cdx4 helps establish the positional identity of cells contributing significantly to vertebrate body formation. By controlling the expression of critical genes Cdx4 influences processes like cell proliferation and differentiation.

Pathways

Cdx4 integrates into the Wnt signaling pathway which is essential for cellular proliferation and differentiation. Cdx4 interacts with the canonical Wnt pathway tuning the transcriptional activity of downstream effectors. Another associated pathway is the retinoic acid signaling where Cdx4 may co-regulate gene expression. Proteins such as beta-catenin can collaborate with Cdx4 mediating its effects on transcriptional regulation within these pathways.

Cdx4 has implications in certain types of leukemia and congenital abnormalities. In leukemia abnormal regulation of Cdx4 might contribute to the uncontrolled proliferation of hematopoietic cells often involving other proteins such as Hox gene cluster members. In congenital developmental disorders altered function or mutation of Cdx4 may lead to improper body segmentation and formation potentially interacting with proteins like retinoic acid receptors to influence disease outcomes.
