Biological function summary
CHAC2 participates in the degradation of glutathione an essential antioxidant within cells. This protein forms part of a glutathione degradation complex helping to maintain cellular homeostasis by affecting oxidative stress response. By breaking down gamma-glutamyl bonds in glutathione CHAC2 influences many cellular functions such as cell proliferation and apoptosis.
Pathways
CHAC2 significantly impacts oxidative stress and apoptosis pathways. In these routes CHAC2's activity interlinks closely with the regulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. CHAC1 a homolog of CHAC2 shares similarities in the pathways suggesting a level of redundancy or cooperative functions between these proteins particularly in stress response mechanisms.
