Supplementary information

This supplementary information is collated from multiple sources and compiled automatically.

The protein CHAC2 also known as ChaC cation transport regulator homolog 2 is a member of the glutathione-specific gamma-glutamylcyclotransferase family. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 28 kDa. CHAC2 is mainly expressed in the liver kidney and testis where it plays key roles in cellular processes. Researchers often study CHAC2 for its involvement in modulating cellular redox states and regulating intracellular glutathione levels.
Biological function summary

CHAC2 participates in the degradation of glutathione an essential antioxidant within cells. This protein forms part of a glutathione degradation complex helping to maintain cellular homeostasis by affecting oxidative stress response. By breaking down gamma-glutamyl bonds in glutathione CHAC2 influences many cellular functions such as cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Pathways

CHAC2 significantly impacts oxidative stress and apoptosis pathways. In these routes CHAC2's activity interlinks closely with the regulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. CHAC1 a homolog of CHAC2 shares similarities in the pathways suggesting a level of redundancy or cooperative functions between these proteins particularly in stress response mechanisms.

CHAC2 associates with conditions featuring oxidative stress imbalances like cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. The modulation of glutathione levels by CHAC2 has implications in cancer therapy where oxidative stress could affect cell survival. Connections with proteins like CHAC1 highlight similar pathways in disease contexts suggesting potential combinatorial therapeutic strategies targeting related pathways in oxidative stress-induced conditions.
