Activity summary

Chromogranin B also known as secretogranin I is a member of the granin protein family and is sometimes referred to alongside chromogranin A and other chromogranins. Chromogranin B is a secretory protein with a known mass of approximately 80 kDa. This protein expresses primarily in neuroendocrine cells where it localizes to the secretory granules. Chromogranins including chromogranin B play a role in the formation and stabilization of secretory granules important for storing and releasing peptide hormones and neuropeptides.

Biological function summary

Chromogranin B functions beyond merely being a constituent of secretory granules. It plays a role in the regulation of neuroendocrine secretion processes and interacts with the chromogranin core complex. This complex is involved in the packaging and sorting of peptides and hormones within cells. Chromogranin B also exhibits roles in modulating calcium-binding dynamics which is critical for cellular signaling and hormone secretion. Unlike chromogranin A chromogranin B is less abundant but still significant for cellular processes.

Pathways

Chromogranin B prominently aligns with the secretory pathway associated with neuroendocrine tissues. This pathway involves several proteins like chromogranin A that often work alongside chromogranin B to influence hormone release. Another pathway where chromogranin B plays a role involves the regulation of catecholamine release vital for stress responses. This particular involvement with catecholamines links chromogranin B to its role in neurotransmitter regulation.

Associated diseases and disorders

Chromogranin B shows an association with conditions such as neuroendocrine tumors and hypertension. In neuroendocrine tumors chromogranin B can serve as a biomarker since its levels often elevate in these conditions akin to chromogranin A. Hypertension studies suggest connections between chromogranin B and the dysregulation of catecholamine release impacting blood pressure regulation. Understanding the role of chromogranin B and its related proteins can help in diagnosing and potentially targeting these disorders.
