Biological function summary
Chromogranin B functions beyond merely being a constituent of secretory granules. It plays a role in the regulation of neuroendocrine secretion processes and interacts with the chromogranin core complex. This complex is involved in the packaging and sorting of peptides and hormones within cells. Chromogranin B also exhibits roles in modulating calcium-binding dynamics which is critical for cellular signaling and hormone secretion. Unlike chromogranin A chromogranin B is less abundant but still significant for cellular processes.
Pathways
Chromogranin B prominently aligns with the secretory pathway associated with neuroendocrine tissues. This pathway involves several proteins like chromogranin A that often work alongside chromogranin B to influence hormone release. Another pathway where chromogranin B plays a role involves the regulation of catecholamine release vital for stress responses. This particular involvement with catecholamines links chromogranin B to its role in neurotransmitter regulation.
