Has both beta-1,3-glucuronic acid and beta-1,4-N-acetylgalactosamine transferase activity. Transfers glucuronic acid (GlcUA) from UDP-GlcUA and N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) from UDP-GalNAc to the non-reducing end of the elongating chondroitin polymer. Seems to act as a specific activating factor for CHSY1 in chondroitin polymerization (PubMed:12716890). Isoform 2. May facilitate PRKN transport into the mitochondria. In collaboration with PRKN, may enhance cell viability and protect cells from oxidative stress.

Paraffin-embedded human small intestine tissue stained for CHSS2 using ab224495 at 1/200 dilution in immunohistochemical analysis.
All lanes: Western blot - Anti-CHSS2 antibody (ab224495)
Lane 1: Vector only transfected HEK-293T (human epithelial cell line from embryonic kidney transformed with large T antigen) cell lysate
Lane 2: CHSS2 overepression HEK-293T cell lysate (Co-expressed with a C-terminal myc-DDK tag, ~3.1 kDa)
