Supplementary information

Clenbuterol often referred to as Clen is a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist with a molecular mass of approximately 277.193 g/mol. It is primarily expressed in bronchial tissues and exerts mechanical effects by activating the beta-2 adrenergic receptors leading to bronchodilation. This action makes it an effective agent for expanding air passages enhancing its use in clinical settings for respiratory therapy.
Biological function summary

This compound stimulates the sympathetic nervous system resulting in increased airway capacity and energy expenditure. Clenbuterol is not part of a complex but influences cellular activities by elevating cyclic AMP levels which in turn enhances lipolysis and thermogenesis. These effects have led to its investigation in metabolic enhancement contexts although the primary focus remains on respiratory relief.

Pathways

It acts primarily through the adrenergic signaling pathway. This pathway emphasizes its interaction with proteins such as adenylyl cyclase and protein kinase A facilitating the downstream effects of cyclic AMP production. Another important pathway includes the cAMP-dependent signaling pathways where it significantly impacts energy metabolism and lipid breakdown further elucidating its role in metabolic processes.

Clenbuterol is relevant for treating asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to its bronchodilatory effects. In asthma it interacts with proteins such as phosphodiesterase which modulate cyclic AMP levels in immune cells reducing airway inflammation. While primarily utilized in respiratory conditions this drug’s metabolic effects have garnered attention for obesity management although safety concerns limit its application in this area.
