Biological function summary
CREST functions as a regulator of gene transcription which is essential for various neuronal activities such as dendritic development and synaptic plasticity. As a component of the SWI/SNF complex CREST interacts with other proteins to modulate the transcription of genes required for neuronal differentiation and activity-dependent responses. These interactions help to facilitate the structural and functional modifications necessary for synaptic development and neurotransmission.
Pathways
CREST interacts within the calcium signaling pathway and CREB signaling pathways. In the calcium signaling pathway CREST has a role in calcium-dependent regulation of gene expression impacting neuronal development. It operates closely with other proteins like CBP (CREB-binding protein) to regulate the transcription of genes that are important for neuronal plasticity and memory formation.
