C1q/TNF-related protein 12 (CTRP12) also known as adipolin or C1qDC2 is a secreted protein with a molecular weight of approximately 33 kDa. It is mainly expressed in adipose tissue and is also found in skeletal muscle and the liver. Mechanically CTRP12 belongs to the adipokine family which typically regulates metabolic processes. It functions as a signaling molecule and has homology to complement C1Q proteins and TNF ligands.
Biological function summary

CTRP12 impacts several metabolic pathways. It plays a role in glucose metabolism insulin sensitivity and energy homeostasis. CTRP12 is not part of a complex but interacts with receptors and other molecules to mediate its effects. Its expression increases during adipocyte differentiation which suggests a direct link with adipogenesis.

Pathways

Adipokines like CTRP12 integrate into the insulin signaling and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathways. In these processes CTRP12 works closely with proteins such as insulin receptor substrate (IRS) and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) to enhance metabolic activity and maintain energy balance.
