Biological function summary
Cytochrome b5 type B interacts with a wide range of oxidoreductase enzymes which assists in lipid biosynthesis. It acts as a component of the electron transport chain within the endoplasmic reticulum supporting the desaturation and elongation of fatty acids. Though not part of a larger complex its role in electron donation is critical for maintaining cellular lipid homeostasis and synthesizing essential fatty acids.
Pathways
CYB5B plays a role in both the fatty acid metabolic process and the sterol biosynthetic pathway. It provides electrons to desaturase enzymes like stearoyl-CoA desaturase facilitating the transformation of saturated fatty acids into unsaturated fatty acids. This electron relay is also integral to the modulation of cholesterol levels within cells and relates to proteins such as NADH-cytochrome b5 reductase that help transfer electrons from NADH to cytochrome b5.
