Plays a role in the establishment of the epidermal barrier on plantar skin (By similarity). Involved in the maintenance of cell layer development and keratin filament bundles in suprabasal cells of the epithelium (By similarity). (Microbial infection) Acts as a mediator of S.aureus adherence to desquamated nasal epithelial cells via clfB, and hence may play a role in nasal colonization. (Microbial infection) Binds S.pneumoniae PsrP, mediating adherence of the bacteria to lung cell lines. Reduction of levels of KRT10 keratin decrease adherence, overexpression increases adherence. Neither protein has to be glycosylated for the interaction to occur.

Cytokeratin 10 and 13 also known as CK10 and CK13 are intermediate filament proteins part of the keratin family. Cytokeratin 10 has a molecular mass of approximately 59 kDa while cytokeratin 13 weighs about 53 kDa. Expression of these proteins occurs mainly in the stratified epithelium like that found in the epidermis and certain mucosal tissues. Their mechanical role includes maintaining structural integrity and providing resilience to epithelial cells against mechanical stress.
Cytokeratin 10 and 13 play important roles in the differentiation and development of epithelial tissues. As components of the cytoskeletal network they aid in cell adhesion migration and intracellular signaling. These proteins integrate into a complex of intermediate filaments that support cellular architecture collaborating with other cytokeratins to sustain cellular framework.
Cytokeratin 10 and 13 participate in the keratinization process essential for skin homeostasis. They are integral to the epidermal differentiation complex which includes interactions with proteins like loricrin and filaggrin. These pathways ensure proper formation of the skin barrier and prevent water loss maintaining skin's protective function.
Cytokeratin 10 and 13 are associated with conditions such as Ichthyosis with confetti and oral cancer. Altered expression or mutations can lead to disruptions in epithelial differentiation contributing to disease pathogenesis. Their involvement with proteins like p63 and other keratins links them to hereditary skin disorders where impaired regulation of the keratinocyte life cycle manifests as clinical symptoms.
