It serves as part of the desmosomal complex where it anchors intermediate filaments to the desmosomal plaque ensuring the mechanical stability required by tissues under mechanical stress. This function is particularly critical in epithelial cells and cardiac tissue where desmoplakin interacts closely with other desmosomal components to maintain robust cell-to-cell connections.

Desmoplakin plays a significant role in the regulation of adhesive structures through its involvement in the intercellular junctional complex pathways.
