Supplementary information

DHRS4L2 also known as dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR family) member 4 like 2 is a part of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase family. Its molecular mass is approximately 30 kDa. This protein is expressed in various tissues with higher concentrations observed in the liver and kidney. The DHRS4L2 protein plays a role in oxidoreductase activity where it contributes to the balance of NAD+/NADH and NADP+/NADPH metabolic co-factors important for numerous enzymatic reactions.
Biological function summary

DHRS4L2 acts by converting substrates through its oxidoreductase function maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. It is not well-characterized as a part of any protein complex but its activity supports the detoxification processes and lipid metabolism within the cell. Through these functions the protein aids in regulating the concentration of vital metabolites and protecting cells from oxidative stress.

Pathways

DHRS4L2 participates in the lipid metabolism pathway and is implicated in maintaining redox homeostasis. It interacts alongside other enzymes involved in the NADP+ and NADPH metabolism pathway including the related protein DHRS4. The protein's activity plays an essential role in the metabolic pathways ensuring the biochemical stability required for proper cell function and energy balance.

DHRS4L2 shows connections to metabolic syndrome and liver diseases. Dysregulated expression of DHRS4L2 has been observed in cases of metabolic syndrome where the dysfunction of lipid metabolism occurs. In liver diseases such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease its altered activity may exacerbate oxidative stress contributing to disease progression. The protein's interaction with enzymes like DHRS4 is significant in understanding its role in pathophysiological conditions offering insights into potential therapeutic targets.
