Target data

Function

Up-regulates the activity of the Rho guanine nucleotide exchange factor ARHGEF18 (By similarity). Involved in the regulation of the circumferential actomyosin belt in epithelial cells (PubMed:22006950). Promotes cellular adhesion, migration and motility in vitro and may play a role in wound healing (PubMed:23664528). May have a role in mediating cytoskeletal changes associated with steroid-induced cell differentiation (PubMed:14521927).

Activity summary

EHM2 also known as Emp24 domain-containing protein 2 is a mechanistic component of the vesicular trafficking process. Its molecular weight is approximately 27 kDa. This protein is mainly expressed in tissues such as the liver and heart. EHM2 plays a role in the transport of cargo molecules from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus assisting in cellular organization and protein sorting.

Biological function summary

EHM2 functions as a part of the p24 protein complex which is essential for the vesicular transport system. This complex helps maintain the integrity and fidelity of transport vesicles. EHM2 interacts with the COPII and COPI coat protein complexes ensuring proper cargo selection and vesicle budding. It aids in maintaining cellular homeostasis through its contribution to efficient intracellular transport mechanisms.

Pathways

EHM2 participates in intracellular protein transport and secretion pathways. It plays a role in the ER-Golgi transport pathway and interacts with proteins like Sec24 and COPI integral components for vesicle formation and budding from the ER. These interactions facilitate the accurate transport of protein cargo and are necessary for maintaining protein distribution throughout the cell.

Associated diseases and disorders

EHM2 shows connection to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Due to its expression in the liver and heart imbalances in EHM2 function may contribute to disorders such as fatty liver disease and cardiomyopathy. EHM2 interacts with proteins like apolipoproteins in these conditions potentially influencing lipid metabolism and cardiovascular health. Understanding EHM2's role could offer insights into therapeutic interventions for these diseases.
