Biological function summary
EIF2B1 regulates protein synthesis by modulating the activity of the eIF2B complex which is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor. This complex comprises five subunits and EIF2B1 is integral for its function. Through regulation of eIF2 EIF2B1 indirectly controls the rate of translation initiation affecting cell growth and stress response mechanisms. In neurons EIF2B1’s activity influences neuronal development and maintenance.
Pathways
EIF2B1 functions prominently in both the unfolded protein response and integrated stress response pathways. These pathways respond to cellular stress by altering translation rates and are essential for maintaining protein homeostasis. EIF2B1 interacts primarily through these pathways with other proteins such as eIF2 and ATF4 which is a transcription factor activated during stress responses.
