ELF5 also known as E74 Like ETS Transcription Factor 5 is a transcription factor with a mass of approximately 27 kDa. It belongs to the ETS family and plays a role in regulating gene expression by binding to specific DNA sequences. ELF5 localizes mainly in epithelial tissues where it influences development and differentiation. This targeting involves critical cellular processes particularly affecting mammary gland and placental development.
ELF5 plays a significant role in maintaining the balance between cellular proliferation and differentiation. It operates within specific protein complexes to modulate the luminal epithelial cell fate in the mammary gland. ELF5 regulates critical genes responsible for alveolar development contributing to normal lactation. In placental tissues it affects trophoblast differentiation and normal placental function reflecting its impact on fetal development.
ELF5 actively participates in pathways involving hormone response and epithelial cell differentiation. It interacts closely with proteins such as GATA3 within these pathways which help regulate luminal cell differentiation in the mammary gland. ELF5 also participates in the Wnt signaling pathway demonstrating its multifaceted roles by influencing cell fate decisions and maintaining epithelial homeostasis.
ELF5 shows connections to breast cancer and placental disorders.
