Supplementary information

The Embigin homolog protein often referred to simply as Embigin plays an important mechanical role within the cell. It is a transmembrane protein with a molecular mass of approximately 41 kDa. Researchers have observed Embigin expressed mostly in the tissues of the developing central nervous system and muscle tissues. It is also detected in adult tissues but in distinct expression patterns including the heart and the testis.
Biological function summary

Embigin is involved in the regulation of cell adhesion and proliferation. It is not generally part of a larger protein complex but acts as a facilitator of cellular interactions particularly during tissue morphogenesis and development. Embigin's role in promoting cell aggregation involves interaction with other cell surface proteins influencing cellular dynamics during development.

Pathways

Embigin plays a role in the integrin signaling pathway. It interacts with integrins which are transmembrane receptors involved in cell adhesion sending signals that regulate the cytoskeleton and the cell cycle. Another pathway related to Embigin's function is the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Through this pathway Embigin indirectly influences cellular survival and growth processes closely interacting with signaling proteins like PI3K.

Researchers have linked Embigin to cancer and neurodegenerative conditions. Changes in Embigin expression have been connected to various cancers as the protein influences cell adhesion and migration which are critical in tumor progression. In neurodegenerative diseases altered expression of Embigin affects cellular interactions in neural tissues relating to proteins like the neural cell adhesion molecule which further impacts neural health and connectivity.

Target data

Plays a role in the outgrowth of motoneurons and in the formation of neuromuscular junctions. Following muscle denervation, promotes nerve terminal sprouting and the formation of additional acetylcholine receptor clusters at synaptic sites without affecting terminal Schwann cell number or morphology. Delays the retraction of terminal sprouts following re-innervation of denervated endplates. May play a role in targeting the monocarboxylate transporters SLC16A1, SLC16A6 and SLC16A7 to the cell membrane (By similarity).
