Biological function summary
The Engrailed 1 protein influences pattern formation by controlling the transcription of key developmental genes. Part of several transcriptional complexes it binds to DNA sequences aiding in the specification of positional identities during embryogenesis. EN1 also has significant functions in the maintenance of cell fates and is essential for the differentiation of numerous cell types. Through these processes EN1 ensures proper segmental development and organogenesis.
Pathways
Engrailed 1 integrates into multiple signaling pathways that control cell development including the Wnt and Hedgehog pathways. Within the Wnt pathway EN1 acts alongside proteins like β-catenin to manage cellular responses vital for neuronal and skeletal formation. It also interacts with other transcription factors such as Pax2 in the regulation of pathways linked to neural development.
