Supplementary information

Epithelial Keratin Type I also known as cytokeratin or CK is a family of cytoskeletal proteins found in the epithelial cells. These proteins are usually around 40-67 kDa in mass. Epithelial Keratin Type I is essential for structural integrity and mechanical strength of epithelial cells. It mainly expresses in epithelial tissues including skin hair and nails and serves a critical role in forming the intermediate filament network.
Biological function summary

These keratins provide stability to cell architecture and protect cells from mechanical and non-mechanical stresses. Epithelial Keratin Type I proteins form heterodimers by pairing with Type II keratins creating filaments that are part of a larger complex. These structures are vital for maintaining the correct function and shape of cells in tissues and they also play a role in cell signaling processes.

Pathways

Epithelial Keratin Type I participates in key pathways like the cytoskeletal signaling and epidermal growth factor (EGF) signaling. These pathways involve interactions with proteins such as keratin 8 and keratin 18. These keratins facilitate communication within cells and help mediate responses to external signals therefore influencing cell proliferation differentiation and apoptosis.

Mutations or dysfunctions in Epithelial Keratin Type I have links to skin diseases such as epidermolysis bullosa simplex and psoriasis. These conditions can result from altered interactions with other keratins such as keratin 5 and keratin 14 disrupting the normal function and structure of epithelial tissues. Such disorders highlight the importance of Epithelial Keratin Type I in maintaining healthy skin and its barrier functions.
