Supplementary information

EXOC1 also known as Exocyst Complex Component 1 is part of the exocyst complex which plays an essential role in vesicle trafficking. The protein works within a large complex that aids in the tethering of secretory vesicles to specific areas of the plasma membrane before fusion. EXOC1 consists of 97 kDa and is the component of the exocyst complex expressed in numerous tissues with high expression in the brain and liver.
Biological function summary

The exocyst complex supports protein and lipid distribution at the cell surface which influences cell signaling growth and differentiation. EXOC1 as a component of this complex contributes to orchestrated membrane dynamics. The exocyst complex includes other proteins such as EXOC3 EXOC4 and SEC10 and together it achieves targeted delivery of vesicles which is necessary for cellular expansion.

Pathways

The exocyst complex including EXOC1 is involved in the exocytosis pathway where it supports the transport of vesicles from the Golgi to the plasma membrane. This protein plays a role alongside small GTPases notably Rho and Rab which regulate vesicular trafficking. EXOC1 associates with the mTOR signaling pathway where it influences cellular growth and metabolism through its role in vesicle targeting.

EXOC1 is linked with conditions such as cancer and diabetes. Its role in vesicle trafficking implicates it in tumor progression where alterations in exocyst complex components disrupt cellular secretion and promote cancerous behaviors. The involvement in the mTOR pathway associates EXOC1 with metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes where dysfunctional signaling affects insulin response. Changes in expression levels or mutations in EXOC1 can influence disease states affecting proteins like Rho GTPases within these complexes.

Target data

Component of the exocyst complex involved in the docking of exocytic vesicles with fusion sites on the plasma membrane.. (Microbial infection) Has an antiviral effect against flaviviruses by affecting viral RNA transcription and translation through the sequestration of elongation factor 1-alpha (EEF1A1). This results in decreased viral RNA synthesis and decreased viral protein translation.
