Supplementary information

FAM126A also known as Hyccin is a protein playing a mechanical role in cellular processes. It has a molecular mass of approximately 55 kDa and is mainly expressed in nervous tissue particularly the central nervous system. FAM126A shows high conservation among species indicating its importance in various physiological functions. Researchers identify key roles for this protein in regulating cell growth and maintaining proper cellular structure.
Biological function summary

FAM126A is involved in the functioning of cells through its integration in multiprotein complexes. It plays a role in the myelin production and maintenance which is important for normal nervous system function. The protein assembles into complexes that stabilize and promote the normal physiology of oligodendrocytes cells responsible for myelin formation. Dysfunction in this protein can disrupt these processes causing adverse effects on neural activity.

Pathways

FAM126A acts in the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and processes related to myelination. Involvement in PI3K/Akt pathway links it to essential cellular mechanisms such as growth and survival. FAM126A shows interactions with proteins like Akt and mTOR which are significant in signal transduction related to cell survival and growth.

Abnormalities in FAM126A function have links to hypomyelination and congenital cataract-motor neuropathy. These conditions show connections to disrupted myelin formation and lead to neurological symptoms. Alterations in FAM126A are thought to affect myelination and interacts closely with proteins involved in myelination processes such as MAG impacting normal neural function and integrity.

Target data

Component of a complex required to localize phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase (PI4K) to the plasma membrane (PubMed : 26571211). The complex acts as a regulator of phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PtdIns(4)P) synthesis (PubMed : 26571211). HYCC1 plays a key role in oligodendrocytes formation, a cell type with expanded plasma membrane that requires generation of PtdIns(4)P (PubMed : 26571211). Its role in oligodendrocytes formation probably explains its importance in myelination of the central and peripheral nervous system (PubMed : 16951682, PubMed : 26571211). May also have a role in the beta-catenin/Lef signaling pathway (Probable).
