FAM126B also known as Hyccin 2 is a protein encoded by the FAM126B gene. This target has a molecular mass of approximately 45 kDa and is expressed in a broad range of tissues including the brain and skeletal muscle. FAM126B plays a mechanical role in myelination and cellular adhesion processes. It participates in maintaining cellular structural integrity and function which is important for normal cellular operations.
FAM126B is involved in the myelination of neurons in the central nervous system. It forms part of a multi-protein complex that influences oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelin sheath formation. Its presence in the complex regulates neural connectivity and ensures efficient transmission of electrical signals in neurons contributing to proper nerve function and signaling.
The FAM126B protein engages in the sphingolipid metabolism and myelin-associated glycoprotein pathways. It is especially significant in the Sphingolipid Signaling Pathway interacting with proteins like MAG (myelin-associated glycoprotein) that are essential for myelin stability. Its influence in these pathways highlights its direct impact on nerve cell communication and overall nerve system health.
FAM126B has connections to neuropathies such as hypomyelination with congenital cataracts and intellectual disability. Mutations in the FAM126B gene contribute to neurological disorders where myelination is affected leading to abnormal nerve signal conduction.
