Activity summary

FARSLB also known as Phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase beta subunit is a protein with a mass of approximately 55 kDa. It plays an important role in protein synthesis facilitating the attachment of phenylalanine to its corresponding tRNA in the cytoplasm. FARSLB is expressed in various tissues with high levels reported in rapidly dividing cells due to its role in active translation processes. The protein functions as part of the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase family and has a well-conserved structure essential for its enzymatic activity.

Biological function summary

The FARSLB subunit contributes to accurate protein translation by ensuring proper amino acid incorporation during polypeptide chain elongation. It forms a heterotetrameric complex with its alpha counterpart FARSA to achieve this. This complex catalyzes the esterification of phenylalanine to its tRNA a critical step in translating genetic information into functional proteins. The activity of FARSLB ensures fidelity in protein synthesis impacting cell growth and function significantly.

Pathways

FARSLB is an essential component of the translation pathway where it cooperates with ribosomal subunits and other translation factors. This protein also ties into the aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis pathway maintaining a supply of charged tRNAs necessary for efficient protein synthesis. FARSLB interacts with proteins like FARSA within this system and its proper function supports cellular processes requiring rapid and accurate protein production.

Associated diseases and disorders

FARSLB has a connection to phenylketonuria a metabolic disorder stemming from anomalies in phenylalanine processing. Aberrations in FARSLB function or expression could influence phenylalanine metabolism and contribute to disease pathology. The protein also associates with neurodegenerative disorders where protein synthesis fidelity becomes compromised. Through these conditions FARSLB interacts closely with phenylalanine and associated metabolic enzymes highlighting its importance in maintaining metabolic and neurological health.
