Activity summary

FGF3 also known as fibroblast growth factor 3 is a protein involved in important cellular processes like cell proliferation and differentiation. The protein has a mass of approximately 30 kDa. It is mainly expressed in the developing brain inner ear and other embryonic structures. FGF3 belongs to the fibroblast growth factor family which consists of several proteins known for their role in various biological activities. The family's versatility makes FGF3's function significant during embryogenesis.

Biological function summary

Fibroblast growth factor 3 plays an important role in the regulation of embryonic development and morphogenesis. The protein acts as a ligand that binds to fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) triggering cascades responsible for cellular growth. Although FGF3 does not form complexes it often works in coordination with other growth factors to facilitate developmental pathways through receptor-mediated signaling. Its involvement is important to the development of the central nervous system and auditory structures.

Pathways

Fibroblast growth factor 3 takes part in the FGFR signaling pathway which is essential for multiple developmental processes. This pathway interacts closely with other signaling systems like the MAPK/ERK pathway that influence cell division and differentiation. FGF3 shares a connection with other members of the FGF family such as FGF8 in regulating these pathways. Interactions with FGFRs and downstream MAPK signal transduction highlight its importance in development and cellular function.

Associated diseases and disorders

Disruptions in fibroblast growth factor 3 activity have been associated with conditions such as LAMM syndrome and otodental dysplasia. LAMM syndrome involves hearing loss and abnormalities in the inner ear highlighting FGF3's role in auditory development. The protein's interaction with FGFR2 mutations has been linked to such syndromes indicating a complex relationship in disease phenotypes. The association of FGF3 with specific developmental disorders reflects its critical contributions to normal cellular and tissue development.
