Supplementary information

FGF9 also known as GAF is a member of the fibroblast growth factor family. The FGF9 protein has a molecular mass of approximately 23 kDa. It is commonly expressed in the brain kidney and lungs during fetal development. The FGF9 protein functions as a signaling molecule influencing cell proliferation and differentiation which are essential for proper tissue formation and organogenesis.
Biological function summary

FGF9 contributes to important processes in the development and maintenance of several tissues. It is not known to be part of a larger complex. FGF9 regulates cellular activities such as proliferation and differentiation through its interaction with specific receptors on the cell surface. Its role is significant in skeletal and nervous system development where it ensures proper maturation and function of these systems.

Pathways

The FGF9 protein participates in the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways. These pathways are important for cell survival proliferation and differentiation. FGF9 interacts closely with other fibroblast growth factors such as FGF2 to ensure effective signaling cascades. These interactions affect various cellular responses and contribute to the normal development of multiple organ systems.

Alterations in FGF9 expression can be linked to conditions such as lung fibrosis and cancer. Aberrant FGF9 signaling can contribute to uncontrolled cell proliferation and fibrosis formation. The GAF protein's dysregulation may involve interactions with receptor proteins including FGFR2 in these pathological processes. Understanding FGF9's role in these diseases helps in developing targeted therapeutic strategies.

Target data

Plays an important role in the regulation of embryonic development, cell proliferation, cell differentiation and cell migration. May have a role in glial cell growth and differentiation during development, gliosis during repair and regeneration of brain tissue after damage, differentiation and survival of neuronal cells, and growth stimulation of glial tumors.
