Supplementary information

The G gamma12 protein also known as guanine nucleotide-binding protein subunit gamma 12 is a component of the heterotrimeric G proteins. It has an approximate molecular mass of 8 kDa. This protein predominantly resides at the plasma membrane where it partners with its associated G alpha and G beta subunits. G gamma12 shows expression in various tissues including the brain and heart where it functions as an integral part of signal transduction processes.
Biological function summary

G gamma12 is involved in transmitting signals within cells by interacting with its G alpha and G beta counterparts to form a functional G protein complex. This complex plays a critical role in modulating and transducing signals from activated cell surface receptors to downstream effectors. As a member of the G protein gamma subunit family G gamma12 aids in diverse cellular responses such as cell growth differentiation and motility.

Pathways

G gamma12 plays a part in the MAPK signaling pathway and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. These pathways are significant for regulating various cellular activities like survival and metabolism. Proteins like G beta and specific G alpha subunits closely interact with G gamma12 in these pathways influencing the downstream signaling cascades and cellular responses.

G gamma12 has associations with cancer and cardiovascular diseases. In the context of cancer altered G gamma12 expression affects cell proliferation and migration thereby contributing to tumor development. In cardiovascular diseases it implicates processes such as heart rate regulation. Through these conditions G gamma12 connects to other proteins like G alpha q and beta-adrenergic receptors contributing to the disease state's pathophysiology.

Target data

Guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) are involved as a modulator or transducer in various transmembrane signaling systems. The beta and gamma chains are required for the GTPase activity, for replacement of GDP by GTP, and for G protein-effector interaction.
