Biological function summary
NRF2 interacts with other protein factors to initiate and regulate transcription. It functions as part of the GA-binding protein complex interacting with other transcription factors to control gene expression. This regulatory mechanism is vital for cellular adaptation to changing energy demands and influences oxidative stress responses. NRF2 is actively involved in the induction of antioxidant enzymes and proteins that protect the cell from oxidative damage contributing to cellular longevity and function.
Pathways
NRF2 plays an important role in the oxidative stress response pathway and mitochondrial biogenesis. It interacts with other proteins like KEAP1 which regulates NRF2 stability and activity. In the oxidative stress response NRF2 translocates to the nucleus to activate genes associated with antioxidant responses whereas in mitochondrial biogenesis it influences the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial replication and energy production. These pathways are critical for maintaining cellular health and energy supply in response to metabolic demands.
