Biological function summary
Galectin 13 aligns itself with key processes in immune response modulation and tissue remodeling. Although it is not known to be a part of a large protein complex its interactions within the extracellular matrix provide vital insights into its function. Galectin 13 promotes apoptotic pathways in various types of immune cells contributing to fetal-maternal tolerance during pregnancy. By controlling trophoblast differentiation and invasion it ensures proper embryo implantation and placental development.
Pathways
Several cellular mechanisms involve Galectin 13 as a principal actor. It plays a role in apoptotic pathways specifically those important for maintaining homeostasis during pregnancy. Galectin 13 interacts with proteins like Bcl-2 family members which are known to regulate cell death. It also associates with immune surveillance mechanisms ensuring the maternal immune system does not reject the developing embryo.
