Supplementary information

Galectin 13 also known as placenta-specific 8 protein (PLAC8) is a member of the galectin family. This protein typically has a molecular weight of around 16 kDa. It displays a strong expression in placental tissues and plays a role in the regulation of immune functions. Galectin 13 is secreted in a glycosylation-dependent manner. The protein is involved in cellular recognition and adhesion processes influencing how cells interact with their surrounding environment.
Biological function summary

Galectin 13 aligns itself with key processes in immune response modulation and tissue remodeling. Although it is not known to be a part of a large protein complex its interactions within the extracellular matrix provide vital insights into its function. Galectin 13 promotes apoptotic pathways in various types of immune cells contributing to fetal-maternal tolerance during pregnancy. By controlling trophoblast differentiation and invasion it ensures proper embryo implantation and placental development.

Pathways

Several cellular mechanisms involve Galectin 13 as a principal actor. It plays a role in apoptotic pathways specifically those important for maintaining homeostasis during pregnancy. Galectin 13 interacts with proteins like Bcl-2 family members which are known to regulate cell death. It also associates with immune surveillance mechanisms ensuring the maternal immune system does not reject the developing embryo.

Altered Galectin 13 expression connects to pregnancy-related complications. Conditions like preeclampsia and gestational trophoblastic diseases demonstrate links to the dysregulation of Galectin 13. These disorders often involve other proteins such as HIF-1α and VEGF highlighting its significance in placental function and vascular health. Understanding Galectin 13's role in these contexts can offer further insights into therapeutic approaches.
