GALNT6 also known as UDP-N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosamine: polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 6 is an enzyme weighing approximately 68 kDa. This enzyme belongs to the family of GalNAc transferases. It is known for its role in catalyzing the transfer of N-acetylgalactosamine to serine and threonine residues on proteins initiating O-linked glycosylation. GALNT6 is found expressed in various tissues but notably in the mammary gland and placenta.
The enzyme GALNT6 plays a significant role in the modification of proteins through O-glycosylation impacting protein stability and function. It belongs to a larger group of glycosylation enzymes that participate in the modification and maturation of secreted and membrane-bound proteins. The function of GALNT6 influences the formation and activity of a variety of protein complexes although it itself does not form a complex. Through its action GALNT6 impacts cell signaling and adhesion processes.
GALNT6 actively participates in the O-glycan biosynthesis pathway which is fundamental for generating proper glycoprotein structures. GALNT6 has been linked to certain types of cancer including breast cancer due to its role in glycoprotein formation that can affect cell adhesion and migration. Research also implicates GALNT6 in tumor progression potentially influencing the expression or function of proteins like mucins which are glycoproteins involved in cellular protection and signaling. Abnormal GALNT6 activity has further connections to lung cancer where its altered glycosylation patterns could modulate interactions with other enzymes and proteins important to disease progression.
