Biological function summary
The enzyme GALNT6 plays a significant role in the modification of proteins through O-glycosylation impacting protein stability and function. It belongs to a larger group of glycosylation enzymes that participate in the modification and maturation of secreted and membrane-bound proteins. The function of GALNT6 influences the formation and activity of a variety of protein complexes although it itself does not form a complex. Through its action GALNT6 impacts cell signaling and adhesion processes.
Pathways
GALNT6 actively participates in the O-glycan biosynthesis pathway which is fundamental for generating proper glycoprotein structures. This enzyme works in conjunction with related enzymes like GALNT2 which also catalyze similar glycosylation reactions in the same pathway. Furthermore GALNT6 indirectly contributes to cellular pathways associated with cell growth and differentiation by altering the glycans on signaling molecules.
