GCC185 also known as Golgi coiled-coil protein 185 plays a mechanical role in the tethering of Golgi membranes. It has a mass of approximately 185 kDa and localizes to the trans-Golgi network (TGN). GCC185 is responsible for maintaining Golgi structure and integrity by interacting with various membrane vesicles and microtubules. It is broadly expressed in different cell types emphasizing its general importance in maintaining the secretory pathway across various tissues.
Biological function summary

GCC185 facilitates vesicle tethering at the Golgi apparatus. It is a component of the larger Golgin family which is a group of coiled-coil proteins. These proteins assist in modulating Golgi organization and function by interactively recruiting and tethering vesicles from the trans-Golgi to other cellular destinations. GCC185 specifically binds to the Rab GTPases contributing to membrane trafficking and ensuring the effective transport of proteins and lipids within the cell.

Golgin which probably tethers transport vesicles to the trans-Golgi network (TGN) and regulates vesicular transport between the endosomes and the Golgi. As a RAB9A effector it is involved in recycling of the mannose 6-phosphate receptor from the late endosomes to the TGN. May also play a role in transport between the recycling endosomes and the Golgi. Required for maintenance of the Golgi structure, it is involved in the biogenesis of noncentrosomal, Golgi-associated microtubules through recruitment of CLASP1 and CLASP2.
