GK2 also known as Glycerol Kinase 2 is primarily an enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of glycerol to form glycerol-3-phosphate. This enzyme activity is essential in lipid metabolism. The protein is relatively small with a molecular mass of about 60 kDa. Expression of GK2 occurs mostly in the testes although it is also found in other tissues indicating a specific but not exclusive role in male physiology.
GK2 contributes significantly to the metabolic processes involving glycerol and energy storage. It functions as part of an enzymatic sequence for transforming glycerol into a form usable for energy production. While GK2 is not traditionally associated with complex structures it interacts closely with other enzymes in the glycerol-3-phosphate pathway to maintain its function. This interaction ensures effective regulation of glycerol levels in cells aiding metabolic balance.
GK2 plays a significant role in lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis. The glycerol-3-phosphate shuttle utilizes GK2 to facilitate the transfer of reducing equivalents into mitochondria linking it to oxidative phosphorylation.
